J-Beauty is widely known for their high usage in skincare of natural botanical ingredients. As mentioned in my previous post about "Geishas", many of these Japanese-derived ingredients are time-tested and even have been used for centuries as part of skincare rituals. Ingredients such as Ginseng, Rice bran, Sake, Yuzu, Green Tea, Algae, Pearl extract 🦪, Camellia Seed Oil, Licorice Root, Silk extract, Japanese mugwort, Coix Seed Extract (Hatomugi), Shiso Leaf, just to name a few. They are relied on their rejuvenative/anti-aging and skin brightening properties, even for acne and sensitivity as well. That combined with today's cutting-edge science & backed technology. To achieve that plumped, dewy, hydrated and clear "Mochi Skin" (mochi hada).
These natural-based ingredients mixed with synthetically engineered ingredients such as Hyaluronic Acid, Vitamin C (aka Ascorbic Acid), Kojic Acid, Peptides (or Amino Acids), Niacinamide that are some of the more popular ingredients that are seem in J-Beauty products. Hyaluronic acid is a star ⭐ ingredient in Japan, it's found in many products and widely used in many formulas for skin-plumping and hydration. Hada Labo is a popular drugstore brand that has its whole line dedicated to this ingredient specifically. One of the main concerns for a Japanese consumer is brightening to try to achieve crystal-clear skin with as minimal freckling and hyperpigmentation as possible with a few of the aforementioned ingredients, such as Kojic acid and Vitamin C. "Fairer skin" for Japanese women stemmed from centuries ago of symbolizing being from a higher social-class status, and not working outside from manual labor conditions. To today's standards being defined as a part of "Youth". This ideal exists in other Asian cultures as well as well. As well as diligent & everyday usage of Sunscreen is always a must in protecting your skin and the ingredients used to nourish & treat/repair the skin with, so it doesn't go to waste without protection. Rain, snow or shine an SPF should always be used! Niacinamide is another ingredient that seems to very popular as well, in helping with skin texture, hyperpigmentation, acne and redness/inflammation as well. It's a multi-purpose ingredient that assists in multiples concerns.
